Arlington Public Schools in Virginia is ratcheting up the daily pay rate for permanent, daily and long-term substitutes in an effort to attract more teachers. In a news release, the school system said the increase “will place APS as a frontrunner in the Northern Virginia Region for substitute pay rates” that took effect Monday. Arlington is once again at the top of the list when it comes to fitness. The Virginia locality ranked No. 1 as the fittest in the nation, according to the 2021 ACSM American Fitness Index by the American College of Sports Medicine and the Anthem Foundation. After sharing a Facebook photo debuting the shop’s cicada sundae, two customers wanted to try it. The next two in line ordered the same. The Arlington County Board has awarded a $4.23 million contract to an engineering firm to design and study the environmental impact of a pedestrian bridge linking Crystal City and Reagan National Airport. “It’s an exciting project … the connector will link Crystal City’s core and the airport, serving pedestrians, bicyclists, and micro-mobility users of all ages and abilities,” said Matt de Ferranti, chair of the Arlington County Board. Baltimore Mexican restaurant Banditos Bar & Kitchen is expanding to Greater Washington. The bar and restaurant, which has a location in Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood and another on the way in White Marsh, will open in Arlington. Amazon construction plans in Arlington, Virginia, made public Tuesday include a 350-foot-tall corkscrew tower with a nature trail on the outside that follows the building’s curves as it reaches toward the sky. The PenPlace project aims to create a community uniting people and nature within an 18-hour district, according to John Schoettler, Amazon’s vice president of real estate and facilities. Developer JBG Smith has acquired the former Americana Hotel in Arlington, Virginia, after its closure earlier this month ending nearly six decades in business, and may redevelop the site as apartments or condos. The Americana Hotel site, prominently overlooking Richmond Highway, is directly across the street from Amazon’s HQ2 buildings in National Landing.
